What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used measure that compares weight to height to give a quick, general idea of whether weight falls within a healthy range. It's calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in meters squared.
Standard ranges
Below 18.5 is classified underweight, 18.5–24.9 normal weight, 25–29.9 overweight, and 30+ obese. These are the general ranges adopted by the World Health Organization.
Limitations
BMI is a general screening tool, not a diagnosis — athletes with high muscle mass, for example, may show a high BMI without excess body fat. Always consult a doctor or nutritionist for advice specific to you.
